DAVID ANTHONY TAUSZKY (AMERICAN, 1878–1972), SEATED WOMAN IN A WHITE DRESS - Oil on canvas. Signed upper right ”Tauszky.” The painting depicts a fashionable young woman seated in an elegant interior, dressed in a white high-collared gown accented with black trim. The sitter is shown before green shutters and domestic furnishings, including a table lamp, a decorative ceramic vessel, and blue-painted furniture. Executed with vigorous impressionistic brushwork and a luminous palette, the composition reflects Tauszky's affinity for portraiture and figure subjects during the early decades of the twentieth century. The thick impasto, vibrant color contrasts, and spontaneous handling of paint are characteristic of the artist's mature style. The reverse reveals an unfinished study or abandoned composition, indicating the artist's practical reuse of materials and offering insight into his working process. David Anthony Tauszky was born in Cincinnati and studied in New York before continuing his training at the Académie Julian in Paris under Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant. He established a successful career as a portrait and figure painter, exhibiting widely in New York and later in California. Dimensions: 24 x 20 in., (61 x 51 cm.) Conditions: The painting presents well overall. Surface examination reveals age-related craquelure, scattered areas of paint loss, frame abrasion, and minor surface soiling. The reverse contains an unfinished painted composition. Please make all inquiries before bidding. All lots are sold ”as-is”, refer to our T&C. Helios Auctions offers in-house shipping.
