VLADIMIR LEBEDEV (1891-1967), NUDE IN RED, OIL ON BOARD - Oil on board. Signed and dated lower right, ”V. L. 33”. Presented in a modern giltwood frame. This portrait depicts a seated female nude shown half-length against a vibrant vermilion-red background. The sitter, rendered with a characteristic economy of form and subtle modeling, gazes contemplatively beyond the viewer. The composition reflects many of the qualities associated with Vladimir Lebedev's mature work of the late 1920s and 1930s. The simplified forms, restrained palette, delicate transitions of tone, and elegant treatment of the human figure reveal the artist's mastery of modernist portraiture. Lebedev, one of the most important figures of the Leningrad avant-garde, was celebrated not only for his pioneering graphic art and book illustrations but also for his intimate portraits and figure studies, in which classical draftsmanship was combined with a distinctly modern sensibility. Executed in 1933, during a significant period of the artist's career, the painting demonstrates the balance between realism and stylization that became a hallmark of Lebedev's figurative works. Surface examination reveals minor craquelure and light surface wear consistent with age. The reverse was not available for full inspection due to the backing board.
