CHARLEMAGNE-OSCAR GUËT (1801-1871), ”AU TOILETTE”, OIL ON CANVAS - A finely executed oil on canvas depicting a young woman seated before her dressing table. The sitter is shown arranging her long hair while holding a small toilette bottle, dressed in a white chemise and draped in a lavender silk shawl. Rendered with delicate modeling and refined academic technique, the composition reflects the romantic sensibility characteristic of mid-19th century French genre and portrait painting. The elegant subject matter, luminous flesh tones, and richly painted fabrics are consistent with the work of Charlemagne-Oscar Guët, a pupil of Antoine-Jean Gros, Louis Hersent, and Horace Vernet. Presented in an ornate carved and giltwood frame. Dimensions: 28 1/4 x 21 1/2 in., (71.8 x 54.6 cm.) Conditions: Canvas appears professionally relined. Fine age craquelure throughout. Minor scattered surface wear and restorations visible under close inspection. Frame with losses, wear, and restoration to the gilding. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
