AN 18TH CENTURY ITALIAN BATTLE SCENE OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING - Oil on canvas. Monumental battle composition depicting mounted cavalry engaged in combat before fortified city walls, with dramatic clouds and smoke filling the sky. The densely animated foreground is populated with horsemen, fallen soldiers, shields, lances, and military accoutrements rendered in a vigorous Baroque manner. The composition recalls seventeenth-century battle paintings associated with Italian and Flemish martial scenes, particularly works in the manner of Jacques Courtois, called Il Borgognone, and other Old Master military painters.
