Bidspirit auction | A STILL LIFE WITH FRUIT,
A STILL LIFE WITH FRUIT, PITCHER AND GOBLET, INSCRIBED ”R. FALK”, PARIS, 1931, OIL ON BOARD - The work is executed with broad, energetic brushstrokes and a rich palette of greens, reds, oranges, and muted violet-gray tones characteristic of Post-Impressionist painting. The reverse bears an inscription reading ”R. Falk, Paris 1931.” The inscription references Robert Rafailovich Falk (1886–1958), the noted Russian modernist painter and member of the Jack of Diamonds group, who was living in Paris during this period. However, the inscription alone cannot be accepted as evidence of authorship, and no definitive attribution to Robert Falk should be inferred on the basis of the present markings. While certain elements of the composition and palette may evoke aspects of the School of Paris and early twentieth-century modernist painting, the work has not been examined by a recognized Falk specialist, nor is any supporting provenance, exhibition history, or scholarly documentation presently available. Accordingly, the painting should be regarded as an unidentified work bearing an attribution inscription rather than an authenticated work by Robert Falk. Dimensions: 18 1/4 x 23 1/2 in., (46.5 x 59.7 cm.) Conditions: Unframed. Surface dirt, scattered abrasions, edge wear, and minor losses consistent with age. The board exhibits discoloration and handling wear on the reverse. No examination under ultraviolet light has been conducted. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
