AN ORDER OF MERIT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY, GRAND CROSS SET, CASED - A cased insignia set of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Verdienstorden der Bundesrepublik Deutschland), comprising a neck badge with red enameled cross suspended from its original neck ribbon, breast star, miniature lapel rosette, and matching lapel button. The insignia feature the black Federal Eagle within circular medallions and are housed in the original fitted presentation case. The reverse of the rosette and lapel button is marked Steinhauer & Lück, Lüdenscheid, the renowned German maker of orders and decorations. The Order of Merit was established in 1951 by Federal President Theodor Heuss and remains the only general order of merit awarded by the Federal Republic of Germany for distinguished service in political, economic, social, intellectual, and charitable fields. This set represents one of the higher classes of the order, intended for wear with neck ribbon and breast star. Dimensions: Breast Star D: 2 7/8 in., (7.3 cm.); Cross D: 2 3/8 in., (6 cm.); Case: 13 1/4 x 8 1/4 x 2 in., (33.7 x 21 x 5.1 cm.) Conditions: The insignia displays light wear consistent with handling and storage. Enamel appears intact.
