A GERMAN INFLATION CRISIS SATIRICAL MEDAL ”WUCHERER”, BY FRIEDRICH WILHELM HÖRNLEIN, 1923 - A satirical coin made in Weimar-era Germany depicting an obese man sitting atop a large sheaf of wheat, surrounded by the text 'Ob Jud Ob Christ Ein Schuft Der Wucherer Ist' (Whether Jew or Christian, the Usurer is a Scoundrel). The obverse bears the text 'In Bosen Zeiten Ist Ohn Zweifel Ein Mensch Oft Des Andern Teufel' (In bad times, without a doubt, one person is often another's devil). The coin is marked with the year 1923 on the verso, and again on the obverse, where it also bears the initials of the designer Friedrich Wilhelm Hornlein (1873-1945). Hornlein was a prominent coin and medal designer during his lifetime. He and his immediate family were killed during the bombing of Dresden toward the end of the war. Germany, 1923.
