A GERMAN WAR MERIT CROSS FIRST CLASS WITH SWORDS (KRIEGSVERDIENSTKREUZ I. KLASSE MIT SCHWERTERN) - A World War II German War Merit Cross First Class with Swords (Kriegsverdienstkreuz I. Klasse mit Schwertern), manufactured by Deschler & Sohn of Munich, identified by the maker's mark ”1” stamped on the reverse pin. The silvered badge is formed as an eight-pointed Maltese cross with pebbled arms, crossed swords between the arms, and a central wreath enclosing a swastika. The reverse fitted with a vertical pin-back assembly. Instituted on 18 October 1939, the War Merit Cross was awarded for exceptional wartime service and achievement contributing to the German war effort. The version with swords denoted service performed under conditions involving military operations or enemy influence, but not qualifying for the Iron Cross.
