AN ORDER OF THE GERMAN EAGLE, III CLASS CROSS WITH SWORDS, TYPE I, BY DESCHLER & SOHN, MUNICH - A World War II German Order of the German Eagle (Verdienstorden vom Deutschen Adler), III Class Cross with Swords, Type I, manufactured by Deschler & Sohn of Munich. The decoration consists of a white enameled Maltese cross superimposed upon four gilt national eagles clutching wreaths enclosing swastikas. The reverse is fitted with crossed swords signifying a wartime award. The suspension ring is marked ”900” for silver content and bears the Deschler maker's code ”1”. Originally intended primarily for presentation to foreign military officers, diplomats, and government officials, the Order of the German Eagle was established in 1937 and became one of the principal decorations awarded by the German government to non-German recipients. Type I examples produced by Deschler & Sohn are among the most sought-after variants of the order. Surviving specimens retaining their original case of issue are increasingly scarce.
