A WW2 GERMAN OSTMEDAILLE, EASTERN FRONT, C. 1942 - A German World War 2 'Winterschlacht Im Osten' (Winter Battle in the East) medal, more commonly known as the 'Ostmedaille', with its original ribbon. The medal was awarded to German personnel who served on the Eastern Front during the deadly winter of 1941-1942. The medal was jokingly referred to as the 'Gefrierfleischorden' (Frozen Meat Medal) by the troops. The obverse depicts the Reichsadler holding a swastika, a helmet and hand grenade above them. The reverse is inscribed with the text 'Winterschlacht Im Osten 1941/42' above a sword and laurel branch. Germany, c. 1942. Dimensions: H: 1 3/4 in., (4.5 cm.); W: 1 1/2 in., (3.8 cm.)
