A GERMAN CHOLM SHIELD (CHOLMSCHILD), 1942, THIRD REICH PERIOD - Constructed of die-struck silvered metal in the form of a shield mounted on its original field-grey wool backing. The obverse bears the inscription ”CHOLM 1942” and depicts an Iron Cross superimposed upon a sword against a stylized background representing the defense of the Cholm Pocket. The reverse retains its original paper covering. Instituted on July 1, 1942, the Cholm Shield was awarded to German military personnel who participated in the defense of the encircled garrison at Cholm (Kholm) between January 21 and May 5, 1942. With approximately 5,500 awards authorized, it remains among the rarest and most sought-after of the officially instituted German campaign shields of the Second World War.
