A GERMAN DEMJANSK SHIELD (DEMJANSKSCHILD), 1942, THIRD REICH PERIOD - Constructed of die-struck silvered metal in the form of a shield mounted on its original dark field-grey wool backing. The obverse features a Luftwaffe transport aircraft above crossed swords and the date ”1942,” beneath a panel inscribed ”DEMJANSK, ” surmounted by a national eagle clutching a swastika. The reverse retains its original paper covering. Instituted on April 25, 1943, the Demjansk Shield was awarded to German military personnel who participated in the defense and supply of the Demjansk Pocket between February 8 and April 21, 1942. Dimensions: 4 1/4 x 2 1/8 in., (10.8 x 5.4 cm.) Conditions: Light wear and oxidation to the silvered finish with scattered areas of surface discoloration. The original wool backing remains intact.
