AN AUSTRIAN BRAVERY MEDAL (TAPFERKEITSMEDAILLE), FRANZ JOSEPH I, BRONZE CLASS - Circular bronze medal issued during the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. The obverse bears a right-facing portrait of the emperor with the surrounding legend ”Franz Joseph I. G. G. Kaiser v. Oesterreich.” The reverse is inscribed ”Der Tapferkeit” (”For Bravery”) within a laurel wreath above military trophies. Suspended from its original triangular Austrian ribbon of red with white edge stripes. Instituted as a military decoration for acts of courage and gallantry in the field, the Bronze Bravery Medal was widely awarded to enlisted personnel of the Austro-Hungarian Army during the late nineteenth and First World War periods.
