AN AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN EMPEROR FRANZ JOSEPH I COMMEMORATIVE MEMORIAL MEDAL, 1916 - Gilt metal commemorative cross of Maltese form, centered by a portrait medallion of Emperor Franz Joseph I facing right, enclosed within a laurel wreath. The reverse bears the dates ”1848” and ”1908,” commemorating the sixtieth anniversary of the Emperor's accession to the throne. Fitted with an integral suspension ring. Issued in connection with the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1908, such commemorative decorations were distributed through veterans' and patriotic organizations throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire. They served as mementos honoring the long reign of one of Europe's longest-serving monarchs. Dimensions: 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 in., (3.8 x 3.8 cm.) Conditions: Good overall condition with wear to the gilt finish, scattered oxidation, and surface abrasions consistent with age and handling. Suspension ring intact.
