Petőfi Sándor: Versek. 1842-1844. - Budán, 1844. Magyar Kir. Egyetem. 192p. First edition. The poet's first independently published book of poems (following two translations). After several unsuccessful attempts, he turned to Mihály Vörösmarty for help, who secured the support of the “Nemzeti Kör”. The manuscript was approved by a three-member committee (Vörösmarty, Ede Szigligeti, Sándor Vachott) with minor changes (fifteen poems were omitted). It was probably printed in July (in a somewhat longer version than originally planned) and published in November. Bound with: Versek. 1844-1845. Pest, 1845. Beimel József ny. 188+(4)p. First edition. Petőfi had the manuscript ready for printing between the end of June and mid-August. According to contemporary sources, János Reseta, the censor, removed only one poem, “A magyar nemzet”. The poet was fond of Reseta, which seems to be confirmed by the fact that he did not even include it in his collected poems. The book was finally published during the Autumn Fair of 1-15 November. Worn, contemporary half leather. One leaf restored. Several leaves stained and scribbled. Spine slightly damaged. Szüry: 0
