Round-lidded chest Namban, Japan, 18th century - Round-lidded chest Namban, Japan, 18th century or older, wood covered on all sides with fine mother-of-pearl inlay (some missing) and gilded. Checkered pattern, cartouches with leaves, birds, etc. Iron lock cover, hinged clasp missing. With key, added later, only partially fitting. Gilded bronze lid hinges on the back with engraved decoration. Gilded bronze handles on the sides. Lid lacquered on the inside and decorated with gold, vines, and leaves. Rubbed and partially heavily worn. Approx. 35 x 24 x 18 cm
