Monumental ”Trench Art” Picture Frame with Portrait of Grand Admiral von Tirpitz - This impressive ensemble is an exceptional testimony to what is known as ”Trench Art” from the era of the First World War. It combines artisanal improvisational art with patriotic commemoration of one of the central figures of the Imperial Navy. Central Motif: A contemporary portrait photograph of Grand Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz, the architect of the German High Seas Fleet. The photo shows the admiral in parade uniform with numerous medals and bears his (facsimile) signature. The Frame Construction: An elaborate, architecturally imposing handcrafted piece made from deactivated ammunition parts: Columns: The vertical structure is formed by two massive cartridge cases (presumably 2 cm caliber or similar), on the outer sides of which smaller rifle cartridges are mounted. Gable: The upper finish is a pierced brass gallery crowned by a large ray star. In the center of the star is a coin or emblem with the Prussian eagle. Base: The heavy, rectangular metal base is decorated with stylized fluting and serves as a stand for two additional fixed cartridges, which gives the object a martial stability. Material: Brass, copper, and steel components; the portrait behind glass in a velvet or fabric frame. Condition Preservation: The object is in excellent original condition. The metal shows a wonderful, dark age patina, which underlines its historical character and has deliberately not been polished. Details: The solder joints are solidly executed. The photo is clear and shows only minimal, age-appropriate toning traces.
