Plan of the City of Dresden 1758 Siege Field Marshal Daun – Copper Engraving Raspe - This is an absolute showpiece from the Raspe series and a historically extremely significant document for the Saxon state capital. The map shows the siege plan of Dresden in November 1758 – an event considered one of the most tragic chapters in Dresden's city history. When the Imperial-Austrian army under Field Marshal Daun approached the Prussian-occupied fortress of Dresden, the Prussian governor Count von Schmettau ordered a radical defensive measure: He had the densely populated Dresden suburbs in front of the fortress walls burned block by block (the notorious Dresden suburb fire) to deny the Austrians cover and a clear field of fire. Thousands of inhabitants became homeless in the middle of winter. The special feature of this plan: The burned-down areas of the suburb are precisely mapped and marked on the map! The large, colorfully designed ribbon cartouche at the bottom left provides you with a first-class, detailed legend with 18 numbered positions: Title: “PLAN of the city of Dreſsden together with the enterprise undertaken by the Imperial Royal Army under the command of General Field Marshal von Daun in the month of November A. 1758.” The dramatic note: Directly below the title is the symbol for the marking on the map: “So far the suburbs have been burned.” Important Fortress & City Points: Gates such as the Weiſse Thor (1), Schwarze Thor (2), Wilſche Thor (3), See Thor (5) and the Pirniſche Thor (6) are listed, as well as the Royal Castle (7), the Zwinger Garden (8) and the Armory (9). Military Positions: Among others, the New Prussian Batteries (10), Prussian Retrenchments (13) and the Imperial Batteries (14) are recorded. The Famous Gardens: The Zinzendorffiſcher Garten (15), Hoheiten Garten (16), Moſchinſki Garten (17) and the Garten die Jungfer (18) are specifically listed. Publisher/Numbering: Numbered No. 40 at the top left in the image corner (from the sought-after series “Neues Kriegs-Theater, ” Raspische Buchhandlung, Nuremberg). Condition II
