Narrative of the United States Exploring Expedition 1838-1842, Charles Wilkes, First Edition - Description: Five volumes, detailing the United States Exploring Expediiton, the purpose of which was the exploration of the Pacific Ocean. Lasting five years, the expedition was composed of seven ships and about 350 men, and was commanded Charles Wilkes from the flagship USS VIncennes. Also included are the atlas volume title page and five maps, one being hand colored. Markings & Inscriptions: Some pen inscriptions, bookplates for the Library Company of Philadelphia present Date: 1845 Author: Charles Wilkes (American, 1798- 1877 Publisher: Lea & Blanchard Dimensions: Each volume measures about 10.5” x 7” x 2”. Provenance: From a West Chester, Pennsylvania collection. Condition: Fair to poor condition. Covers detached, deterioration to leather, scattered soiling and minor tears to pages and maps, the five maps and title page of the atlas volume are loose but present.
