BRANDEIS LOUIS: (1856-1941) American lawyer and associate judge on the Supreme Court of the United States 1916-39. A brief A.L.S., Louis D Brandeis, one page, 8vo, Washington D.C., 30th October 1939, to his cousins, Misses Betty and Louise Brandeis. Brandeis sends his relatives a cheque (no longer present) for $80, with his best wishes. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Brandeis. Some very light, minor age wear, VG Brandeis had assisted in the immigration to America of his Viennese cousins, sisters Louise and Betty, in 1938 shortly after the Anschluss. Brandeis swore out an affidavit in May 1938 that he had ample resources and would be willing to sponsor them in the United States so they would not become public charges.
