A large, signed colour 9 x 13 plate, most likely removed from a book, being a reproduction illustration of Chagall's gouache, watercolour, brush and black ink work entitled La Queue des Sirenes (1945), signed ( 'Marc Chagall' ) in dark fountain pen ink to the lower mount and dated at Vence, 1950, in his hand. Some light creasing and a couple of minor stains to the mount, only very slightly affecting Chagall's signature, G   La Queue des Sirenes was executed by Chagall in the last months of 1945, at the end of his American exile. One of a series of gouaches, described as being 'among the most marvellous works' that Chagall produced in America, they illustrate the classic of medieval Arabic literature, The 1001 Nights , and form the basis for the lithographs commissioned by the publisher Kurt Wolff, Chagall's first important book with original prints to be published since the 1920s.
