[VOLTAIRE]: (1694-1778) Francois-Marie Arouet. French Enlightenment writer, historian and philosopher. AMELOT DE CHAILLOU JEAN-JACQUES (1689-1749) French politician who served as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs 1737-44. A.L.S., Amelot, one page, 8vo, Paris, n.d. ('mardi matin'; 7th January 1744?), to Voltaire, in French. Amelot de Chaillou invites Voltaire to visit him at his home that afternoon, at half past four, when 'je pourais vous entretenez sur ce que contiennent vos dernieres lettres auxquelles il m'eut ete trop long de repondre par ecrit' (Translation: 'I could talk to you about what your last letters contain, to which it would have taken me too long to respond in writing'). With blank integral leaf. One small. Light stain to the upper right corner, otherwise VG

At the beginning of 1744 Voltaire found himself in Paris where, as an 'amateur spy', he met with Amelot de Chaillou in the hope of being of assistance to the French government by sending information from Holland and Prussia on the armies and finances of these countries. Voltaire had left Paris by the end of January 1744, and returned to Brussels, thereby distancing himself from the Minister for Foreign Affairs who, in April, was dismissed for incompetence.
