WELLINGTON DUKE OF: (1769-1852) Anglo-Irish Field Marshal, the Victor of Waterloo, 1815. British Prime Minister 1828-30, 1834. A.L.S., Wellington, three pages, 8vo, London, 25th August 1824, to W[illiam] C[onyngham] Plunket. Wellington states that he has received his correspondent's letter regarding Captain Latham and continues 'I send you an abstract of the correspondence (no longer present) between this office & that gentleman from which you will form your own judgement of our cause of complaint against him. I likewise send you his letters (no longer present) observing to you that it is necessary that this gentleman as Barrack Master should write Reports and keep accounts of the expenditure of money & stores; of which he appears to be scarcely capable. The reform of the Barrack Dept. in Ireland has become absolutely necessary; and I assure you has been no easy task considering the persons with whom we had to transact our business'. Some light age wear and a few minor traces of former mounting to the verso, otherwise VG
William Conyngham Plunket (1764-1854) Irish politician and lawyer who served as Attorney-General for Ireland 1805-07, 1822-27, and as Lord Chancellor of Ireland 1830-34, 1835-41.
