JELLICOE EARL: (1859-1935) British Admiral of the Fleet during World War I. A.L.S., Jellicoe, three pages, 8vo, Wellington, New Zealand, 23rd September 1922, to Lady Corbett, on the printed stationery of Government House. Jellicoe writes a letter of condolence to his correspondent, in part, 'A press telegram tonight records the terrible loss which you have sustained in the death of your husband. I have not the honour of knowing you but I am one of that countless number of naval officers who knew Sir Julian and who regarded him with the most profound admiration and respect as the most accomplished naval historian of the age. It was also my privilege to know him most intimately as a man, and I cannot find words to express my grief at his death which I, in common with so many others, look upon as a national loss…..I feel his death so deeply myself and can therefore realise to the full what it means to you. It is only a short week since I received a letter from him and I wrote to him by the last mail. It is too terrible to think that he is now lost to us all'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Jellicoe. VG

Sir Julian Corbett (1854-1922) British naval historian who wrote the official history of British naval operations during World War I.
