NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) - NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) Emperor of France 1804-14, 1815. An extremely rare Autograph Letter by Napoleon, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d. [c. 26 th December 1809], ` Mardy à Mid i´ (“ Tuesday Noon ”), to Pauline Borghese, in French. Napoleon writes obliquely, and states ` je vous envoye une lettre. Je vais au Conseil. Si vous venez diner avec moi vous serez charmante. Mais vous êtes malade. J´irai ce soir à 8h chez Md.´ (“ I am sending you a letter. I'm going to the Council. If you come to dinner with me you will be charming. But you are sick. I will go to Md’s this evening at 8am”) Napoléon says that he will go to Md´s home, referring to “Madame Mère” his mother. The sumptuous Princess Pauline, who never wanted to stay long in Italy, was at the time of the present letter reigning with her beauty and luxury over the Parisian soirées, despite her starting to decline health, Further Napoleon adds ` Dites-moi si l´on est de bonne humeur. Adieu Petite Princesse´ (Translation: “ Tell me if we are in a good mood . Goodbye Little Princess”) Napoleon with the expression “ Tell me if we are in a good mood” recalls and refers to Christine de Mathis, his lover and lady of the Palace of Pauline Borghese. With address leaf in Napoleon´s hand, writing and underlining in bold black ink ` à la Princesse Pauline´ (“ To Princess Pauline”), also bearing a red wax seal, divided in two as a result of the opening of the letter. The present letter was exhibited at the exhibition Exposition Splendeurs de l´Empire (“Splendors of the Empire”) at the Chateau de Malbrouck in 2009.
