XYLANDER WOLF DIETRICH VON: (1903-1945) German General of World War II, Knight's Cross winner. T.L.S., von Xylander, one page, 4to, Munich, 11th June 1943, to Claus von Stauffenberg ('Lieber Stauff!'), in German. Xylander states that it was with great regret that he had learned of his correspondent's serious injury and continues to remark 'I would like to express my sincere regret and at the same time congratulate you on being awarded the German Cross in Gold. Claus von Stauffenberg (1907-1944) German Oberstleutnant of World War II, a central figure in the failed 20 July Plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Stauffenberg had been injured on 7th April 1943 during the Tunisian Campaign, losing his left eye, right hand and two fingers on his left hand. For his injuries, Stauffenberg was awarded the Wound Badge in Gold on 14th April and for his courage the German Cross in Gold on 8th May. Stauffenberg was executed by firing squad for his role in the 20 July Plot.
