NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) - NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) Emperor of France 1804-14, 1815. An excellent and rare letter signed containing multiple words annotated by Napoleon, L.S., ` Napo ´, one page, 4to, gilt edges, St. Cloud, 18th August 1810, to the Duc de Feltre, in French. The letter dictated by Napoleon is in the hand of the Baron Fain, being specific military orders given by the Emperor, including many precisions and details regarding the start up of the march to Spain of the Pajol Brigade which will have to be completed with the addittion of several more battalions. Napoleon states ` Monsieur le duc de Feltre, donnez ordre à chacun des régiments de la brigade Pajol, qui vient de repasser le Rhin pour prendre ses cantonnements à Stenay, de se remettre en marche pour Tours, leur 4º escadron complété à 250 hommes..´ (Translation: ” Monsieur the Duke of Feltre, give orders to each of the regiments of the Pajol brigade, which has just crossed again the Rhine to take up its cantonments at Stenay, to set off again for Tours, their 4th squadron completed at 250 men...”) At this point of the letter, Napoleon crosses few words with a bold ink thick line and annotates above in his hand ` les complétant avec´ (” Completing them with”), then the Baron Fain continues with ` les hommes qui n´ont pas fait la guerre et ceux qui ont rejoint depuis.´ (Translation: ” men who did not go to war and those who have joined since”). Again, and at the conclusion of this sentence, Napoleon adds in his hand ` Wagram´ referring to the troops returning after Wagram. Further the orders state ` Donnez le même ordre au 4º escadron du 24º de chasseurs et au 4º escadron du 13º. Cela formera 5 escadrons ou 1250 hommes qui se réuniront à Tours. Proposez-moi de les former en régiments provisoires et de leur donner une destination pour l´Espagne.´ (Translation: ” Give the same order to the 4th squadron of the 24th Chasseurs and to the 4th squadron of the 13th. This will form 5 squadrons or 1250 men who will meet in Tours. Make a proposal to me to form them into provisional regiments and to give them a destination for Spain.”) Again, and at the conclusion of this sentence, Napoleon adds in his hand ` sous un bon général de Brigade´ (” under a good General of Brigade”) Further Napoleon orders to send two Colonels to organise and take the command of the regiments in Tours, and concludes stating ` Proposez-moi d´envoyer aux régiments de dragons qui sont en Catalogne des secours de cavalerie tirés des 27º et 28º divisions militaires´ (Translation: ” Send a proposal to me to send to the regiments of dragoons which are in Catalonia some cavalry relief drawn from the 27th and 28th military divisions. ”) One last time, Napoleon adds to this sentence ` chasseurs´ indicating that the reinforcement is to help the regiment of dragoons and also the chasseurs one. Accompanied by a small 12mo holograph pinned receipt to the bottom left corner confirming that the letter was received the day after, 19th August.
