THOMAS AMBROISE: (1811-1896) - THOMAS AMBROISE: (1811-1896) French composer, remembered for his operas Mignon (1866) and Hamlet (1868). A very fine A.M.Q.S., ` Ambroise Thomas´, one page, 8vo, n.p., December 1893, in French. On a page removed from an autograph album, Thomas has cleanly and boldly penned eight bars of music which he entitles to the heading ` Romance de Mignon´, from his opera Mignon (1866). Thomas adds several tempo indications above the bars of music such as ` Andantino´, or ` Dolce´, and also annotates beneath the lyrics, ` Connais-tu le pays où fleurit l´oranger? Le pays des fruits d´or et des roses vermeilles´ (Translation: ” Do you know the land where the orange tree blooms? The land of golden fruits and crimson roses”) Small age tone, with left edge very slightly trimmed, otherwise VG
