KUPKA FRANTISEK: (1871-1957) - KUPKA FRANTISEK: (1871-1957) Czech painter and graphic artist. An illustrated A.L.S., Kupka , one page, 4to, n.p., 25th October 1950, to [Blaise] Cendrars, in French. Written in his distinctive hand, Kupka sends an invitation to the novelist and poet Cendrars, ´Nous serions si heureux si nous pouvions t´avoir un peu avec nous. Sois charitable, fixe un jour et viens, nous t´en prions!´ (Translation: ´We'd be so happy if we could have you with us for a while. But we've just had a row because I say that if you're asked to come for lunch or dinner, you probably won't come. And yet in your little note you promise to come; but if you are too busy you will forget. Be charitable, set a date and come, we beg you!´ ). To the lower left quarter of the page Kupka has drawn a pencil street plan, with various ink annotations, which provide instructions for reaching his house at rue Lemaitre, Puteaux, from the Pont de Neuilly. A letter of good association. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG Blaise Cendrars (1887-1961) Swiss-born French novelist and poet, a writer of considerable influence in the European modernist movement. Kupka served as a volunteer in World War I (occasionally accompanied by his wife at the front lines) and is mentioned in La Main coupee, Cendrars´ book describing his own war experiences. Cendrars refers to Kupka as a ´proud soldier, calm, placid, strong´ .
