GUS (1911-1997) - GUS (1911-1997) Gustave Erlich. French cartoonist, illustrator and caricaturist. A good, small selection of four original pen, ink and blue pencil cartoons drawn and signed ( 'Gus' ) by Gus, each one page, oblong folio, n.p. (Paris?), 1961-63. Each of the single panel cartoons are related to Great Britain, one depicting a Franco-English meeting of four men in discussion over Concorde and with the caption ´Un simple detail, gentlemen; au lieu de calcular sur las base de 1000 francs au kilometre, disons plus simplement 14 shillings 12 pence pour 1093 yards 1 pied et 5.2 inches´ (Translation: ´A simple detail, gentlemen; instead of calculating on the basis of 1000 francs per kilometre, let's say more simply 14 shillings 12 pence for 1093 yards 1 foot 5.2 inches´ ) (1st December 1962), and others making reference to Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones (9th February 1961), the English winter (4th January 1962), and a Nouveau scandale en Angleterre with the caption ´On ne sait plus a qui se fier. Prenez ce gentleman, par exemple´ (Translation: ´You don't know who to trust. Take this gentleman, for example´) , dated 13th November 1963 (at the time of the Profumo affair, and in the month following Harold Macmillan´s resignation as Prime Minister, after Profumo had been found by police to have lied in a statement to the House of Commons in which he denied his affair with Christine Keeler). Each with various pencil and ink annotations and stamps etc., to the rectos and versos, relating to their publication in Paris Jour . Some light age wear and minor faults, generally G to about VG, 4
