DOYLE ARTHUR CONAN: (1859-1930) - DOYLE ARTHUR CONAN: (1859-1930) Scottish author, creator of Sherlock Holmes. An interesting A.L.S., Arthur Conan Dayle , one page, 8vo, Windlesham, Crowborough. Sussex, 22nd December n.y. (1925), to the editor of the Daily Express ( ´Sir ´). Doyle´s letter is headed Spirit Messages and he writes, in full, ´Every experienced spiritualist agrees with Colonel Peacocke in what he writes on this subject. No message should be accepted unless it satisfies the judgement and reason of the recipient. This is what Saint Paul meant when he said that the spiritual gifts of the prophets should be subject to the prophets. As death causes no change in the individual it stands to reason that the average spirit is very little more lofty than the average human. It is only when we are privileged to get in contact with those who are the older souls that we get high teaching and inspiration´ . Colonel Peacocke is known to have given a lecture entitled The Fundamentals of the Universe to the British College of Psychic Science in 1924, at which time Peacocke was described as ´a careful thinker, and a clear teacher´. Doyle´s longstanding interest in spiriualism, mythical subjects and the idea of paranormal phenomena is well documented, and in 1926 his two-volume work The History of Spiritualism was published.
