ELUARD PAUL: (1895-1952) A rare autograph poem related to assassinated authors - ELUARD PAUL: (1895-1952) French Poet, widely considered one of the founders of the surrealist movement. An excellent autograph signed poem ` Paul Eluard ´, one page, 4to, lined paper, n.p., n.d., in French. A 25 verses poem in Eluard´s hand, written in bold black ink, which he entitles Critique de la Poésie, referring to three writers assassinated, Federico Garcia Lorca, Saint Paul Roux and Jacques Decour. This important poem states in part ` Le feu fait danser la forêt - Les troncs les coeurs les mains les feuilles - Le bonheur en un seul bouquet - Confus léger fondant sucré - C´est toute une forêt d´amis - Qui s´assemble aux fontaines vertes - Du bon soleil du bois flambant - Garcia Lorca a été mis à mort.... Goutte à goutte elle comble l´homme - Jusqu´aux paupières transparentes - Saint-Pol Roux a été mis à mort - Sa fille a été suppliciée... Dans un jeu qui n´en finit pas - Pierres fanées murs sans écho - Je vous évite d´un sourire - Decour a été mis à mort´. Eluard suggests that evoking happiness is not anymore possible with such horrors. Paper with two binding holes to the left border, not affecting the text or signature. VG The present poem in the hand of Eluard shows only one verse changed comparing it with the final version published. It is on the first verse. In this autograph poem Eluard states `Le feu fait danser la forêt´, while the final publication states ` Le feu réveille la forêt´. The present poem Critique de la Poésie was first published in July 1943. And would later constitutes in 1944 the final poem of the collection Le Lit et la Table (”The Bed and the Table”) Federico Garcia Lorca (1898-1936) Spanish Poet & Dramatist. An iconic figure of the Spanish literature. Lorca was shot near Granada in August 1936 by militias supporting Franco. Garcia Lorca was assassinated at the early age of 38. Saint-Pol-Roux (1861-1940) French Symbolist Poet. In June 1940 a drunken German soldier invaded Saint-Pol-Roux´s house . He killed the family's faithful governess Rose with several gun shots and wounded Saint-Pol-Roux's daughter Divine with a bullet. It is often said that the soldier also raped her. Saint-Pol-Roux was wounded, but managed to survive the tragedy. German military authorities arrested the culprit, tried by the German court martial and sentenced to death and executed. Saint-Pol-Roux was deeply affected by the death of Rose, the injuries of his daughter and the blows he had received. While being in hospital in Brest he learned that the mansion had been visited again and looted. Manuscripts of several works on which Saint-Pol-Roux had been working for several years had been torn or burned. When he saw the disaster, he understood that it would be impossible for him to reconstruct his work and felt an immense despair. Saint-Pol-Roux suffered an uremic crisis and was transported to the hospital where he died few days after. Jacques Decour (1910-1942) French Writer, Essayist and translator. Decour was a resistant fighter who was executed by the Nazis. Decour died at the very early age of 32.
