CHAMPOLLION JEAN-FRANÇOIS: (1790-1832) An extremely rare group of hieroglyphs drawn by Champollion - CHAMPOLLION JEAN-FRANÇOIS: (1790-1832) French philologist and orientalist, known primarily as the decipherer of Egyptian hieroglyphs, and a founding figure in the field of Egyptology. A fine series of original pen and ink drawings by Champollion, unsigned, to the recto and verso of a single 8vo page (approximately 12 x 18.5 cm), n.p., n.d. The ´father of Egyptology´ has drawn over ten images in dark ink, including a series of hieroglyphs (a bird, and various other logograms), as well as a human face, a series of six figures, some carrying a square object whilst flanked by two deities with cat-like heads, two figures apparently greeting each other in a doorway etc. An extremely rare and desirable set of drawings. Lightly mounted at the upper edge to a large 4to page removed from an album. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG A number of the hieroglyphs drawn by Champollion are very reminiscent of those which appear in his personal notebook, held in the French National Library.
