[CARTER HOWARD]: (1874-1939) WHITE PERCY (1852-1938) ´ You must be glad to be home, and near the end of the great Tutankamen adventure´ - [CARTER HOWARD]: (1874-1939) English archaeologist and Egyptologist who discovered the Tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. WHITE PERCY (1852-1938) English novelist and editor who was appointed as an English lecturer at the Egyptian University in Cairo in 1911. White was a close friend of Carter and collaborated with him to write much of Carter´s The Tomb of Tutankhamen (1922-33). A.L.S., Percy White , four pages, 8vo, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, Alpes-Maritimes, 30th April 1930, to Howard Carter ( ´My dear Howard ´). White states that he has heard that Carter is back in England and writes to ´wish you all success, and I most profoundly hope that a ”happy issue” from ”the Egyptian toils” has been yours´ , continuing to add that he finds the weather much more pleasant in the south of France than England and does not want to return before June, ´May is so lovely here & life is as easy as it can be to a lzy old man. The place is full of ´em!´ and also writing of mutual acquaintances, ´ FitzGerald has been in this part of the world. He returned yestarday to Paris. He has, as you know, become an R.C. and I believe has found comfort in the Ritual. but he has not spoken of this to me, sinner that I am! I wonder if you´ve been to the Club. Reeve Wallace, who was here the other day, and was/is on the Committee said ”we were very glad to have him” - meaning you. You´ll have to join the Athenaeum before your career ends as most good Egyptologists do´ . White further writes of his good health, ´I´ve learnt how to ”assist nature” by more careful feeding. I was 78 on 14 April and unless I get tired or drink too much red wine (for which I´ve a weakness) I´m as active as ever - on my feet I mean´ , and concludes his letter ´I feel you´ll have some surprises for me when we meet. You must be glad to be home, and near the end of the great Tutankamen adventure. Now have a good rest & enjoy yourself!´ A letter of good association and content with its reference to Tutankhamun. VG
