STALIN JOSEPH: (1878-1953) - STALIN JOSEPH: (1878-1953) Soviet politician and revolutionary who led the Soviet Union from 1924-53 as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (1922-52) and Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union (1941-53). D.S., with his initials J. S. , in bold red indelible pencil, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d. (early 1940s), in Cyrillic. The typescript document is issued by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, Council of People's Commissars, and Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks) and resolves to ´appoint the Chairman of the State Defence Committee and People's Commissar, Comrade Stalin as Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army and Navy´ and further instructs that, with immediate effect, ´all orders of the Stavka of the Supreme High Command must be signed: ”Supreme Commander-in-Chief J. Stalin, Chief of the General Staff Shaposhnikov”´ and that ´Individual orders and instructions of the Stavka should be issued in the following form: “On behalf of the Stavka of the Supreme High Command, Chief of the General Staff Shaposhnikov”´ . Signed by Stalin at the foot and countersigned in ink by Mikhail Kalinin (1875-1946) Soviet politician and Russian Old Bolshevik revolutionary who served as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union 1938-46. Both signatures appear alongside the official blue ink circular seal of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics Council of People's Commissars. VG Boris Shaposhnikov (1882-1945) Soviet Colonel and Marshal of the Soviet Union who served as Chief of the General Staff of the Red Army 1928-31, 1937-40, and 1941-42.
