NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) - NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) Emperor of France 1804-14, 1815. Napoleon appoints the Mayor of Brussels. A fine L.S., ` Napol ´, one page, 4to, gilt edges paper, Milan, 6th June 1805, to Monsieur Champagny, in French. The letter is in the hand of Napoleon secretary Ménéval. Napoleon had just been crowned ten days earlier, and is now in the process of appointing his loyal subjects to important posts. The Emperor states ` Monsieur Champagny, en transmettant à Monsieur Mérode Vesterloo le decret par lequel je le nomme Maire de Bruxelles, vous lui écrirez pour lui témoigner ma satisfaction´ (Translation: ” Mr. Champagny, in transmitting to Mr. Mérode Vesterloo the decree by which I appoint him Mayor of Brussels, you will write to him to express my satisfaction.”) Further Napoleon refers to a second important appointment he has not decided yet, wishing to choose loyal persons and saying ` Je n´ai point nommé l´archiviste du Piémont, parce que mon intention est de nommer à cette place un Piémontais attaché et sûr.´ (Translation: ” I have not appointed the archivist of Piedmont, because my intention is to appoint to this position a committed and reliable Piedmontese.”). The day after the present letter was written, on 5th May 1805, Napoleon I made a new important appointment, the one of his stepson Eugene Beauharnais as Viceroy of Italy.
