CHURCHILL CLEMENTINE S.: (1885-1977) - CHURCHILL CLEMENTINE S.: (1885-1977) English aristocrat and philanthropist, the wife of British Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill from 1908-65. A.L.S., Clementine S. Churchill , two pages, 4to, Hyde Park Gate, London, 4th May 1960, to Frank Roberts ( ´My dear Sir Frank´ ). Churchill declares ´I´m thrilled to hear that after these long years you are returning to Moscow as Ambassador - Hooray!´ and continues to remark ´I often think of my visit to Moscow in 1945 & of how lost I should have been without your guidance and kindness´ . In a postscript, signed with her initials CSC and marked Private , Churchill further writes ´It may well be that we shall be arriving (in the famous yacht) in Leningrad in July. What fun it would be & most interesting to see you then´ . One small file hole to the upper left corner, otherwise VG Sir Frank Roberts (1907-1998) British diplomat who served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary at Moscow from 1960-62, also holding similar posts at Belgrade and Bonn during his career. Roberts played a key role in developing Anglo-Soviet and Anglo-German relations from the 1940s to the 1960s. During World War II Churchill had served as Chairman of the Red Cross Aid to Russia Fund and while touring Russia near the end of the war, she was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. The yacht to which Churchill refers to in the present letter was Aristotle Onassis´s Christina O . In July 1960 Churchill, accompanied by her husband Winston, embarked on a cruise on the yacht to Venice.
