SOUTHEY ROBERT: (1774-1843) - SOUTHEY ROBERT: (1774-1843) English poet of the Romantic school who served as Poet Laureate from 1813-43. A.L.S., R Southey , one page, small 8vo, Keswick, 7th June 1823, to a gentleman (annotated in pencil to the verso as being John Gibson at Whitehaven). Southey states that he is obliged to his correspondent ´for transmitting Mr. Clarkson´s message´ , adding that it will probably not be too long before he sees him, and remarking ´Meantime I shall gladly concur to petitioning for the abolition of slavery - without which I have long perceived that the abolition of the slave trade would be of little effect´ . In concluding Southey returns some state papers and a pamphlet by Mr. Macaulay. Some light, minor age wear, VG Thomas Clarkson (1760-1846) English abolitionist, and a leading campaigner against the slave trade in the British Empire.
