THACKERAY WILLIAM MAKEPEACE: (1811-1863) - THACKERAY WILLIAM MAKEPEACE: (1811-1863) British novelist of Vanity Fair (1848). A.L.S., W M Thackeray , the signature and body of text in his sloping hand , one page, 8vo, Onslow Square, London, 20th January 1857, to Popham. Thackeray informs his correspondent ´I had to come back to London straight away after the Reading lecture, and polish off George IV tonight in this city so that your kind offer of dry port is impossible´ . Four small, light stains to the corners caused by traces of previous mounting to the verso, otherwise VG Thackeray had delivered a lecture on King George III at Reading on 19th January 1857 and during his lifetime also gave lectures on the English humorists of the eighteenth century, as well as the other first four Hanoverian monarchs, including King George IV. The latter series was published in book form in 1861 as The Four Georges: Sketches of Manners, Morals, Court, and Town Life.
