Auden thanks his correspondent for a book on Enid Starkie (most likely Joanna Richardson´s Enid Starkie: A Biography , 1973) although declines the opportunity to revierw it, remarking ´I can´t do anything about it for two obvious reasons - I don´t know enough about French literature, and I appear in this book´ . One slight paperclip indentation to the upper edge, otherwise VG Philip Dosse - British proprietor of Hansom Books, founded in 1950, and the publishers of a stable of arts magazines including Books and Bookmen. Enid Starkie (1897-1970) Irish literary critic, known for her biographical works on French poets.
