STEINBECK JOHN: (1902-1968) - STEINBECK JOHN: (1902-1968) American writer, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1962. An unusual and amusing pair of brief Autograph statements signed John Steinbeck , two pages, oblong 8vo and slim oblong 8vo, n.p., 19th June 1954. The first, larger page is entitled World Inquiry - Maxims of Life of the Great Authors of the whole world in the hand of a collector, to which Steinbeck responds ´Live!´ and signs his name immediately beneath. The second page, neatly tipped at the left edge to the first page, features a question in the hand of the same collector, ´ If you had to end up your life on one word, what word would it be?´ , to which Steinbeck responds ´Die!´ .
