GATLING RICHARD J.: (1818-1903) - GATLING RICHARD J.: (1818-1903) American inventor of the Gatling gun, considered to be the first successful machine gun. D.S., R J Gatling , as President of the Gatling Gun Co., two pages, 8vo, New York, 15th May 1889. The partially printed document commences with a manuscript statement, ´Certificate of the original face value of Twenty Dollars referred to in letter herein not presented for cancellation´ , with purple rubber stamped text immediately beneath, ´Received final dividend of Eighteen percent on the remaining balance of the within certificate, and also the dividends.....and hereby cancel said certificate in full´ . Signed by Gatling at the conclusion. To the recto appears an earlier A.L.S. by a representative of the Union Mutual Insurance Company, dated at New York, 22nd March 1878, addressed to Edgar S. Welles, and stating, in part, ´Enclosed we hand you check for $28.40 interest in scrip as you request. The company is going out of business and all scrip certificates will be reduced 25%.
