MARCONI GUGLIELMO: (1874-1937) - MARCONI GUGLIELMO: (1874-1937) Italian inventor & electrical engineer, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1909. Marconi is credited as being the inventor of the radio. Autograph Telegram Signed, Senatore Marconi , one page, 8vo, Port Commandant, Civitavecchia, written in Italian on light graph paper and neatly affixed to a partially printed form of the Italian Society of Maritime Radio, one page, oblong folio, 15th October 1934. Marconi writes, in full (translated), 'I arrived aboard Elettra today around 6pm. Stop. I request to make ready for tie-up. ' The printed form bears various annotations etc., relating to the delivery of Marconi's radio telegram. Some light age wear, otherwise VG Marconi purchased the yacht Elettra in 1916 and turned it into his personal laboratory. He spent the last few years of his life travelling and experimenting on the yacht. On 26th July 1934, just a few months before the present telegram, Marconi established a radio telegraphic connection between the Elettra and the radio beacon in Sestri Levante with a wavelength of 63cm, thereby demonstrating how a ship could, in fog and complete darkness, be safely guided into a harbour. This technology later led to the invention of radar.
