The text states, ´SECNAV [James Forrestal, United States Secretary of the Navy] has sent following message to Commander Third Fleet Quote My congratulations to the Third Fleet pilots and its crews for strike on Japan X James Forrestal Unquote CINCPAC [Chester W. Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Fleet] passes this message, his gratification, and extends his congratulations´ . Two file holes to the upper edge and a couple of stains, not affecting the text, otherwise about VG Chester W. Nimitz (1885-1966) American Fleet Admiral who served as Commander-in-Chief, United States Pacific Fleet 1941-45, playing a major role in the naval history of World War II. James Forrestal (1892-1949) American politician who served as United States Secretary of the Navy 1944-47. William F. Halsey Jr. (1882-1959) American Fleet Admiral of World War II who commanded the United States Third Fleet from June 1944 to November 1945. Leading the Third Fleet through the final stages of the war, Halsey oversaw his officers striking targets on the Japanese homeland itself. Third Fleet aircraft also conducted attacks upon Tokyo, the naval base at Kure, and the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.
