WORLD WAR II - WORLD WAR II: An original telex issued by Lieutenant Commander [Fred R.] Salisbury (1914-1990) one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., 15th August 1945, on an official USS Salamaua printed form. The text states, in full, ´ CINCPAC [Chester W. Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Fleet] has received the following message from CINCLANT [Ernest J. King, Commander-in-Chief, Atlantic Command] Heartiest congratulations to you and the officers and men of your Command on your dramatic successes culminating on this memorable day in complete victory X Your Operations in the Pacific against our bitter enemy will be recorded as the most brilliant in history X We of the Atlantic salute you´ . Together with a 10 x 8 photograph of Mamoru Shigemitsu, the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs, signing the Japanese Instrument of Surrender on board the USS Missouri on 2nd September 1945. The USS Missouri (BB63) was the last battleship commissioned by the United States and she was assigned to the Pacific Theatre during World War II, participating in the Battle of Iwo Jima. Her quarterdeck was the site of the surrender of the Empire of Japan on 2nd September 1945 at the end of World War II.
