GOUNOD CHARLES: (1818-1893) - GOUNOD CHARLES: (1818-1893) French Composer. An excellent A.M.Q.S., ` Ch. Gounod ´, folio musical score, two pages, n.p., n.d., with lyrics in French, entitled by Gounod to the heading `Adieu la Marguerite!´, with lengthy and interesting inscription to Madame Irina Bouland, stating at the base ` C´est ici qu´il faudrait trouver quelque chose de charmant; mais le moyen de ne pas mettre trop.. ou trop peu!...´ (Translation: ” This is where I should find something charming; but the way not to put too much... or too little!...”) Gounod has neatly and cleanly penned seventeen bars of music, on two staves, annotating to the heading the tempo `Moderato´. Gounod also adds the lyrics, saying ` Adieu la Marguerite. Oh! pauvre jardinier - Notre fille nous quitte, s´en va se marier. Je veux sur son passage, pour orner le sentier, aller mettre au pillage mon jardin tout entier. Adieu. - Chanter, chanter ma belle... chanter toujours!´ (Translation: ” Farewell, Marguerite. Oh! poor gardener - Our daughter is leaving us, going to get married. I want to go and pillage my entire garden as she passes, to adorn the path.
