GEVAERT FRANCOIS-AUGUSTE: (1828-1908) - GEVAERT FRANCOIS-AUGUSTE: (1828-1908) Belgian Composer and Musicologist. A very fine autograph letter of musical content containing a musical quote, A.L.S., ` F.A Gevaert ´, one page, 8vo, mourning paper, Ville d´Avray, `Wednesday afternoon´, n.d. [September 1864], to a friend and singer, in French. Gevaert explains to his correspondent that he is very satisfied with the romance he has completed, stating ` Ne m´attends pas demain matin: je suis empêché d´aller à Paris, mais je t´envoie la nouvelle romance du 1er acte que je n´hésite pas à trouver très réussie.´ (Translation: ” Don't expect to meet me me tomorrow morning: I'm unable to go to Paris, but I'm sending you the new romance from the first act, which I have no hesitation in finding very successful.”) Further, Gevaert refers to his working plan and to the second act saying `Lundi matin (à moins de contre ordre de ta part) j´irai chez toi pour te faire travailler, et je t´apporterai différentes choses nouvelles, entre autres le final du 2º acte.´ (Translation: ” On Monday morning (unless you order to do otherwise) I will come to your house to make you work, and I will bring you various new things, among others the finale of the second act.”) Further again and before concluding Gevaert refers to a change made on a duo and expects that his correspondent will be able to sing a sentence in a higher pitch, stating ` J´ai trouvé le changement pour le duo avec Galli-Marié, cela va bien à condition que tu puisses chanter la phrase en Sol / un ton et demi plus haut...´ (Translation: ” I found the change for the duet with Galli-Marié to be fine, provided you can sing the phrase in G / a tone and a half higher...”) and following to that comment, Gevaert adds beneath a two bars musical quote, adding two words of the lyrics beneath ` riant espoir´. G to VG Gevaert is most probably referring to his last opera Le Capitaine Henriot (1864), an opéra-comique in three acts, with libretto by Victorien Sardou, premiered on 29th December 1864. Captain Henriot being Henry IV King of France. Célestine Galli-Marié (1840-1905) French Mezzo-soprano. Best remembered for creating the title role in Bizet´s opera Carmen. Galli-Marié premiered the role of Blanche d´Etianges in Gevaerrt´s opera Le Capitaine Henriot (1864) The letter is most probably addressed to Leon Achard (1831-1905) French Tenor who performed the role of René de Mauléon at the premiere of Le Capitaine Henriot (1864)
