Lyapunov thanks his correspondent for their congratulations on the Russian concerts in Germany and also for having sent an issue of Courrier Musical containing an article on which Lyapunov remarks ´ Il parait que le plupart des articles allemands sont assez favorable excepté quelques uns qui trouvent qu´après Tschaikowsky la musique russe n´a produit rien d´important´ (Translation: ´It seems that most of the German articles are quite favourable, except for a few which consider that Russian music has produced nothing of importance since Tchaikovsky´ ), further adding it was a pity that Dimitriewitch was unable to come to Leipzig or Berlin as it would have been a great pleasure to have seen him, continuing ´Vous me communiquez de beaucoup de conférences que vous allez faire et j´ai appris déjà de M. Balakirew que vous avez eu un grand succès à Bruxelles. J´admire votre activité infatigable et cette masse de travaux que vous avez a faire toujours´ (Translation: ´You tell me of many lectures you are going to give, and I have already heard from Mr Balakirev that you were very successful in Brussels. I admire your tireless activity and the huge amount of work you always have to do´ ), further writing that on his return to St. Petersburg he had much of his own urgent work to attend to and apologising for the unintentional negligence and delay in writing his letter. Lyapunov also makes a request of his correspondent, ´J´ai appris aussi de M. Balakirew que vous allez lui envoyer votre photographie que vous trouvez bonne. Si vous aviez la bonté de m´envoyer aussi une, ce serait un vif plaisir pour moi´ (Translation: ´ I also learned from Mr. Balakirev that you are sending him a photograph of yourself that you like. If you would be so kind as to send me one as well, it would give me great pleasure´ ). VG Mily Balakirev (1837-1910) Russian composer, pianist and conductor known for his work in promoting musical nationalism and for his encouragement of more famous Russian composers, notably Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Balakirev was also responsible, in the late 1850s and early 1860s, for bringing together the group of composers known as The Five (the other four members being Alexander Borodin, César Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsokov). Lyapunov had travelled to St. Petersburg in 1885 in search of Balakirev, becoming the most important member of Balakirev's latter-day circle. The elder composer took Lyapunov under his wing, and oversaw his early compositions as closely as he had done with the members of The Five. Balakirev's influence remained the dominant influence in Lyapunov´s creative life.
