MARTINEAU HARRIET: (1802-1876) - MARTINEAU HARRIET: (1802-1876) English social theorist, abolitionist and writer. A.L.S., H. Martineau , four pages, small 8vo, Birmingham, 22nd September n.y., to Mr. Bell. Martineau acknowledges her correspondent´s note, a copy of which she has sent to Mrs. Reid, and continues ´I am sure all the lot-holders are truly obliged to you, for the great trouble you have taken, & the care you have bestowed on their interests´ , further adding that she hopes to return on the 1st October when ´my first anxiety will be to visit the field, & examine the cottages. I shall be heartily sorry if I find the cottages deficient in light, or any thing else´ . Martineau also explains that she had seen Mrs. Reid at Malvern the previous week, and ´She was much interested in hearing about the whole affair, & in no hurry to have her money back again, if we can safely employ it for the good of our neighbourhood´ . One very small, neat split to the upper edge of the central vertical fold of the bifolium, VG Elizabeth Jesser Reid (1789-1866) English social reformer, anti-slavery activist and philanthropist, a friend of Martineau. The cottages referred to in the present letter were built on land at Eller Rigg in Ambledside. The plots had been gifted to Martineau by Reid through the Windermere Benefit Building Society.
