LALO EDOUARD: (1823-1892) - LALO EDOUARD: (1823-1892) French Composer. Best-remembered for his Symphonie Espagnole (` Spanish Symphony´), written in 1874 for violinist Pablo Sarasate. A very fine A.L.S., ` E. Lalo´, one page, 8vo, 86 Avenue Niel [Paris], 8th November 1889, to an unidentified lady, in French. Lalo invites his correspondent to a private premiere performance of his only Piano Concerto in F minor (1889), stating in part ` Chère Madame, je me trouve bien prétentieux de vous envoyer une invitation pour peu de chose! Je me risque: lundi prochain, 9h! du soir, Diemer et Staub essaieront mon nouveau C [oncert] o pour piano, chez moi, sans aucune toilette ; nous n´aurons que quelques intimes, ne voulant pas de public pour le premier essai d´un morceau que je ne connais pas moi-même. L´élève de Diemer, Staub, jouera le 2º piano, maigre squelette de l´orchestre…´ (Translation: ` I feel quite pretentious sending you an invitation for very little! I´ll take the risk: next Monday, 9h! in the evening, Diemer and Staub will test my new Concerto for piano, at home, no dinner-dressing , only few close friends will be present, because we do not want public for the first essay of a work that I do not know myself, Diermer´s pupil, Staub, will play the 2 nd piano, a skin skeleton of the orchestra…´) Further, Lalo informs about the official premiere date for his concerto, saying ` Le C [oncert] o sera exécuté le 1 er Décembre chez Colonne au Châtelet´ (Translation: ` The Concerto will be performed the 1st of December at Colonne, at the Chatelet´) The letter bears to the heading a blind embossed seal of the Viardot collection. He taught at the Conservatoire de Paris, and among his pupils were Alfred Cortot, Alfredo Castella, Marcel Dupré and Edouard Risler.
